What oil do you use?

Hello Everybody. I am a new jeep XJ owner and I have a question for everyone regarding what kind of oil you use. I recently picked up some quakerstate 5W30 since it is almost winter here in Calgary. I seen my manual suggested either 10W30 or 5W30 depending on the weather conditions. I havent changed the oil yet as I wanted to hear everyones thoughts. Thanks everybody.
Corey

Welcome to the forum Crazycorey, 5w30 will give you a slightly easier start in the cold, I run 5w30 Amsoil Synthetic all year round and haven't had any problems with it.

With my 89 xj that I had and in fact my 03 tj I have always used 10w30 quaker/ctc/walmart whatever i find the cheapests and oil filter same thing but I change oil every 5-6000 miles. May be if it was brand new I might be more inclined to put some semi syn in.

I Have not had an issue with it man. I do use the block heater when it is really cold, other then that, I just fire her up.

Re: What oil do you use?

i've been using 5w30

Im trying to sort out what oil i should be using... heres what i've been thinking...

i've put that 160 degree thermostat in my jeep instead of the stock 195/210, so it runs much cooler 71C instead of 100C (and yea it definitely gives more power when the radiator is kept cool, just cant tell any difference in 4 Low since theres alot more load on the engine, and the speeds are much lower)

but im just wondering about the operating range of the oil, am i getting anywhere near the optimal warm operating range, or is it because its W rating is low enough i dont have to worry so much about it starting up since its winter weight is good enough...

Do i have to have a lower high temp rating... since my high temp doesn't get as hot until im offroad, or parked idling for a long time while the engine is running...but then is it worth it, of course major mechanical damage if it looses all viscosity and becomes like water when its too hot... But if im on a long cross continental trip lol would it benefit to have a lighter weight oil, would it increase gas mileage possibly... since the stopping is at a minimum IE to get gas and rest rooms...

Last winter, my jeep HATED me on the cold startups, i didn't take into considerations that my jeep didn't see direct sunlight until about 11, then got nothing at 2pm, and had wind coming down off the Restigouche lol

my check engine light came on for "too cold for too long" and ran in open loop to warm it up... bye bye gas mileage...

heat kicks in quicker with a lower temp t-stat aswell, just wont get as hot of course lol

You should not have an issue with the lower temp stat and your oil. 5W30 is already light as is. If you are worried about it, go to a Full Synthetic like Royal purple or any of the good names and you will be fine.
