upshifting problem

Hey guys.
I have a 1996 XJ with a 6 cyl and 4x4 trans
I have a tranny problem that is getting worse.
Have changed trans fluid/filter.
Was not upshifting properly from first to second initially only when trans heated up.
Now after coming to a stop it doesn't kick down (we drop it into first manually and manually upshift)
It works fine when manually shifting.
Also when the rpm's get high in 1st gear, if we let of the gas momentarily, it will shift to second. If you start of really slow in first gear it will shift too soon!
I have adjusted the TV linkage per the shop manual, but someone said it could be slipping/worn.
So we are wondering if it will likely need rebuilding, or if adjusting the front and rear transmission bands may help.
Thanks for any advice in advance.
AJ

Re: upshifting problem

If your able to adjust the front and rear bands then you should do them when you change the transmission fluid/ filter. Probably long overdue.
Which trans do you have in your XJ?

Re: upshifting problem

Yeah, it sounds simple according to the Haynes manual, but the rear requires removing the pan, which I have already done twice to change the filter and fluid, but I may very well have to do it again.
One guy at a tranny shop (an XJ owner himself) suggested try another TPS, so I may grab one at the wreckers tomorrow before doing that.
Am off to do T-stat and flush now.
Thanks for the advice 04WJGuy
