Kicking transmission

Ok, so I just bought this 1998 Cherokee Sport A/T . First Jeep I've ever owned, i love it. But it seems to me that the transmission gives quite the kick when you put it in drive. Just wondering if this is normal and that I shouldnt worru about it or if I should have it looked at ?

thx

Hiya,
Could it be that your idle is set too high?

Re: Kicking transmission

Like Savasa said, idle to high, could be a worn u-joint, or even time to do change the transmission fluid and filter. Some of the Chrysler transmissions do shift hard at times though.

Re: Kicking transmission

Cherokee sport doesn't have a Chrysler transmission, it's the Aisin Warner or AW4 transmission. A good reliable transmission.

Mine kicks a bit as well (98 XJ) but my brother-in-laws 99 XJ is perfectly smooth
My idle is good at 650rpm so not sure what to tell ya..... but know you are not alone :)

Re: Kicking transmission

check ur transmission fluid temperature sensor because if it not functioning properly it can generate great shockloads because of valving not functioning accordingly. is your check engine light on/working

like siad previously :
check U joints and if idle speed too high should be around 750 RPM
