Jeep Cherokee Lift Kit Questions
 

Alright so I'm new here and I've been Google-ing for hours and i found this website but i can't find my answers in the search either. lol

So 3 main questions.
I have a 1996 Cherokee classic
and the thing needs some work so I'm considering just changing the whole jeep since i need to replace the ball joints, bearings. 'u' joints, floor heater core.....etc.

1) I was wondering if there is anywhere to find a general "walk-through" or "How-To" for a lift kit...now i don't mean..."place washer "A" onto stud "B2" " I'm just saying....like a this is what you need kinda thing...like everything I'm gonna have to replace.

2) Are there any height laws in Ontario for bumper height, light height, wheels, anything.... so far the only thing i can find is that i cannot exceed 13.1 feet (or something like that) :D

and 3) Any down sides or is it impossible to putting a cummins diesel straight from a dodge ram 2500 in?

any answers are greatly appreciated.

As far as "what you need" goes, depends on what you want. Above all else you will require COURAGE. You will end up hacking out your flares if you want tires that are bigger than 31". Even with no hacking, and 31"s, you will still rub.
31"s ----> 3" lift. A buddy is running this on his XJ, and rubs every once in a while.
33"s ----> 5" lift (and start hacking out the fenders). I am running 33"s with 6" of lift, and I still rub at full turn, but not much rubbing.
I am from out west, so I wouldn't know about the Ontario rules.
Not sure about the engine swap.... but kinda leaning towards no.

Good site for alot of info is NAXJA (North American XJ Association). They cover just about everything you could possibly want to know when it comes to an XJ. Just do a search or read through the posts in the modified tech section before you post a question. Those Mericans can get down right rude if you ask something without searching first. At least that's what I've seen when browsing through the forums.

GoJeep (Gojeep Home Page) has a good write up on fender trimming on his site and other interesting XJ stuff.

Dropping a Cummins into an XJ is not something I'd look at too seriously. They weigh a ton and you'd also need the heavier trans and Tcase. You'll probably run into some problems with the overall length of this setup which will make your rear driveshaft angles extreme and require a fair amount of $$$ fabrication. You could probably do it if you really wanted to, but you would need to run Ford F250/350 coils up front to handle all the extra weight at a minimum. It would put a lot of strain on the entire suspension and end up breaking a lot of the stock components in time.

i have yet to b pulled over in ontario for the lift i have and was a weekend job with 36" tsl's

Check out jeepforum.com

Go through the FAQ section, you should be able to find what you need. The guy's there are good to but if you ask a question be specific, you won't get any good responses if it's wide open, like what size tire can I fit on a 3" lift.

I use the Full Traction 6" lift on my 89 XJ and I run 35" Yokohama M/T's and as you will read on their website: Full-Traction Suspension - Jeep Suspension Lift Kits and Systems This lift kit will alow your XJ to ride as smooth as or even better than stock!

I once had the rear leaf springs re-arched to 8.25" and added a daystar 2.25" coil spacer up front for a total lift of aprox. 8.25>9" to high... looks good on the street.

On my latest project 87 MJ truggy, I'm only going with 4" of lift and I will be running 37" of tire on 4 link rear so with the proper cutting and a few other tricks one can stay Low n Wide.

Hope this helps you a bit with your lift questions the FT website has an image of all the parts included with the 6" FT lift.

The FT Lift Kit comes with a great set of installation instructions, you can download a copy of those instructions from their website.. aprox 10 hours, all bolt on, no welding.
