cold air intake
I have a friend with a 98 xj, is thinking about putting in a cold air intake, I told him it might not be a good idea on a vehicle intended for offroading, he uses it for a daily driver and will occasionally use it in light offroading situations. Is it a good idea to have a cold air and if so is there anyone who could recomend a good brand.
well the main thing is getting a good FILTER... K&N's flow great, but they dont filter very well (alot of times you can look thru the filter and see clear air thru their cotton gauze) this is bad if your ever following someone down a dusty trail, or run up some miles before you clean it (and i've wiped out dust from the inside of my tube with my old K&N race filter... )
I've read alot of good things on AEM kits, seem to have good filtration.
if he gets into the mud he needs to make sure he gets some sort of splash guard to keep the mud out.
really he's going to get a cool tone with a cold air intake and a bit more power... gas mileage will stay about the same...
the biggest thing he could do for a power increase is a new throttle body, the stock one actually shrinks in side under the butterfly valve... i have pics in my album of the throttlebody differences... and the material can be removed with a dremel if your feeling brave! free HP!!

stock 4.0L throttle body opening
stsock base narrowed down below butterfly valve
bored out throttle body, with larger butterfly valve.
the middle of the throttle body butterfly shaft is halved, countersunk screws, and sharpened plate for optimal airflow at partial throttle.
