2001 Cherokee Sport won't engage 4x4
Have checked drive shafts and diffs and transfer case. Is there a fuse for this system, and if so, where? System just quit today

Could you be a bit more descriptive on what happens. Is there not just a lever that you pull to shift into 4 x 4 ?

Re: 2001 Cherokee Sport won't engage 4x4
Four wheel drive was working fine on weekend (boat launch). When I tried to engage four wheel drive yesterday (pulled lever) dash indicator did not come on and four wheel drive did not engage. I checked oil levels in both diffs and transfer case (good). I checked drive shafts and u-joints (good). I am not mechanically inclined. I looked in owner's manual for fuse location as it seems this is an electrically operated system ( found two electrical plug ins on transfer case). I can't find a fuse for the system to see if that is the problem. I have tried engaging while stopped and in neutral. I have tried while coasting. I have tried with engine off. Suggestions appreciated.https://www.jeepscanada.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I thought the t/case was purely mechanical on the xj's, I'll have to do a bit more research.

Re: 2001 Cherokee Sport won't engage 4x4
As far as I can find out the t/case is shifted mechanically which suggests to me that it is going into four, but the bulb is not indicating the fact (jack both ends off the ground and check if both ends turn), or the shift rod might have popped off at one end or the other which of course means it's not shifting.

Thanx, I'll try this on the weekend.

Re: 2001 Cherokee Sport won't engage 4x4
i dont have much experience with cherokees but i did own an '89 cherokee pioneer about 12 years ago that had a similar problem. turned out the 4x4 was engaged by a vacuum actuator, which had failed, and was easily replaced. jeep was in the shop for only a few hours...
i realize this may not help you if you system is purely mechanical, but this seems to be unconfirmed at this point... good luck with it! keep us posted... |

Thanx. Checked the hose - seems okay but taking vehicle to a garage for assurance. Main problems - I'm not mechanically inclined, and shops are 300 km away.
