Question on upping a SL for '02 TJ
Newbie to the Jeepin' world. Bought a '02 TJ off my father who had decked it out pretty well including:
1.5" Body Lift 2.5" Rancho Suspesion Lift 456 gearing ARB air lockers Warn winch and bumpers 33" tires a bunch of underarmour Its pretty sweet as is, but I think it would look a bit better and have more articulating clearance if the SL were upped to 4". Not really thinking of going bigger in tires but I guess it would allow for it. I am moderately technically inclined but lacking in knowledge when it comes to this. I was hoping folks would help point me in the right direction on things to research. I want to know what all I will need to do to raise the lift. Can any of the current lift kit be used in newer iteration? Will I need to do an engine lift? 'Tummy tuck'? Are their easier methods of getting near the same result? (I don't know, maybe just bigger coils, again I don't know) |
Re: Question on upping a SL for '02 TJ
some of the others may correct me on this, but i'm pretty sure you could just buy a 4" SL kit, and simply swap out your 2.5" SL. out with the old, in with the new. with almost 6" of combined lift, you may want to put larger tires on it, just for aesthetic reasons. take it to your local tire shop and have them place a larger tire (34 or 35") next to it so you can get an idea of what it would look like.
if you want to articulate your suspension more, you may want to look into some quicker disco's for your sway bars. lots of youtube stuff to watch regarding this. just don't forget to hook 'em up again once off the trails or she'll roll over on ya! hope this helps... i would not use any current lift components with a new/different kit. i would save all the current SL components, then sell the used kit on kijijii to help offset the cost of the new one. |

Thanks for the info.
Oh yeah, forgot to ask about split yoke eliminator. Don't know if it has this yet, have to ask my dad who did many of the mods (the rest in the shop). |
Re: Question on upping a SL for '02 TJ
they are recommended if you have more than 2" of suspension lift mainly to avoid dropping your transfer case. most lift kits will come with a 1" spacer and bolt kit for your t case to eliminate vibrations in the driveshaft caused by too steep of an angle.
imo, dropping the t case is not such a big deal if you're only doing mild wheeling. if your gonna be rock crawling where every inch of clearance matters, the slip yolk eliminator is the way to go. i would suggest putting the 4" lift in, see if you have vibrations in the driveshaft. if you do, put in the spacer for the t case and check it again. if you still have vibrations in the shaft, then get the SYE. for the little bit of extra work, you could save yourself a fair chunk of change. you could spend $400-$500 easy to set up the SYE. |

Was doing some research on fender flares. The Bushwacker ones I was looking at have poor ratings/reviews. Then I found Metalcloak. Holy snickies! That are so freaking cool, they give appearance of more lift, more actual clearance are durable unlike the plastic jobbies. A dealer in Mississauga carries the brand. While they cost more, they are within reason and I can keep the same lift I got already.
