Outdoorsy question
Ok this isn't a jeep question but I know jeepers like going outside, camping hunting fishing or what have you.
My question is have you ever gotta greif from the fuzz for carrying a knife? I was thinking about buying one, I was going to try out camping this year but I've always been told you need a good knife when you camp. But then I thought where do I put it? In a bag? If I get searched it could be a concealed weapon, if I wear it on my person in plain sight might intimate others if I need to goto a walmart or something for supplies. Then my brain exploded... Any help would be nice, I was looking at bowie knifes :-S |
Re: Outdoorsy question
Don't know how to answer that, other than to say don't try taking it to an airport or major sporting event. I always carry a small buck knife, If you are stopped for any reason they will sometimes ask if you have any weapons in the vehicle, My answer has always been "I have a buck knife in my pocket and a crap load of tools in the back of the truck, many of which could be considered a weapon" never been a problem.

Re: Outdoorsy question
The Criminal Code defines prohibited weapons as follows:
""prohibited weapon" means (a) a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife, or (b) any weapon, other than a firearm, that is prescribed to be a prohibited weapon." Note that you can take a perfectly legal knife and make it a prohibited weapon by loosening the pivot screw. So, as with most things in the Criminal Code, it's not just the specific knife that's illegal so much as how you use it. i have a few knives that you have to flick your entire arm to get it to open unassisted (with one hand), so its definitely in the grey area... carrying a giant bowie knife is completely legal in Canada so long as it is not concealed... the second you cover it up on you (inside a jacket, under a shirt, even under a seat of your Jeep) it becomes a concealed weapon and you must have a permit to do that... As far as i know there are no length laws here, it seems to be up to Law Enforcement and Peace Officers to use their digression on what they think you intend to do with it... so i wouldn't carry a bowie all over town, that would raise a few eyebrows... but having it out in the country, i doubt anyone would say much of anything about it... NEVER declare it to be for self defense use... |
Re: Outdoorsy question
I carry 2 blades on me daily.
I've been pulled over in Alberta with my shotgun strapped to my roll bar and my rifle tucked between my seat and my console and haven't had a thing said to me as long as they aren't loaded. That being said the law enforcement in my area is pretty slack and I don't always have them stored like that lol I don't ever go in the woods and set up camp without a gun. My hiking bag has a hatchet and a 7 inch fixed blade strapped to it at all times. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. |

Re: Outdoorsy question
CrazyWJ242 said it perfect. Seeing as I am the 'Fuzz" as long as you declare it DO NOT hide it and as long as its not out right illegal such as a machete etc you should be good. Dont ever conceal it. Dont ever carry it on your person.
Most cops are outdoorsy ppl and understand the need for a good knife etc. Just use common sense. |
