Clutch Required, 2005 TJ Sport, 6 cyl, 6 spd

Hi All, I'm an old Jeep guy (currently 2005 TJ & 2011 Sahara) but a new member to the group. Jeep is located in Mississauga. I'm hoping to get some thoughts on a replacement clutch.

My clutch is 'shuttering' in first gear from a complete stop but this 'shutter' disappears in higher gears. It has become worse in the past 12 months and I am assuming that this will require replacement in the near future. I have had a clutch quote from Mr. Trans at roughly $700 and a quote from the Dealer at roughly $1800 plus.

While I am not a huge fan of Dealer pricing on anything, I am wondering if having a Dealer perform the clutch work is the best way to go given the OEM parts and complexity of the clutch?

Any thoughts and/or suggestions on alternatives?

Thanks in advance for anything you can provide. Glad to be a new member and I look forward to future discussions!

Are you sure this is a clutch problem? Sounds more like a driveshaft problem to me.

You can check if it's a driveshaft easily enough by removing the front shaft and going for a drive. Then if it's still there put the shaft back in and do the same with the rear shaft but you'll have to put it in 4WD in order to go for a drive.

If you decide that you want to replace your clutch still I'd go with aftermarket parts like Luk or centerforce. It should take about 4-6 hours to replace the clutch assembly. But you're likely looking longer because it would be a good idea to have the plate sent out to be machines and cleaned up.

I also wouldn't have the dealer do it. There are many good automotive places that you can have the work done at. I have most of my mechanical work done at my buddy's shop is Oshawa.
