Default Camera/Sensor?

We just purchased a 2010 Jeep Patriot Limited and absolutely love it. It is fully loaded and we are very much enjoying playing with and figuring out all the new gadgets.

Above the Rear View Window and below the Home Link and on the same consol as the front interior lights there is what appears to be a camera. It looks like the camera lense you would find on a cellphone or the webcam on a laptop. We have no clue what this is or what it does. We searched high and low in the manual and even online. It very well may not be a camera but we really have no idea what it is or what it does and are hoping someone can fill us in!

It was suggested that maybe it was a camera that displays the view of the backseat on the Nav Screen, which would be awesome as we have a toddler. But in our searching of the menu options and in the manual, we cant find anything that supports this theory.

Another theory is that maybe it is just sensor for something, but a sensor for what would be the question.

If you can enlighten me on what this thing-a-ma-jigger does or is for, it would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

congrats on the new Jeep. I hope you love it. I've never been in a 2011 Patriot, so I can't say for sure... best guess would be an ambient light sensor for auto-dimming features?

Thank you for the reply. I went to my local dealership to ask them and I had three salesmen out looking at it. They had no idea so they got a fourth guy who has been selling Jeeps for years and he said that it was nothing, just a bolt or rivet to hold the interior light cover on. Honestly, I dont think thats right, it looks nothing like a bolt or a rivet and it also doesnt look like its holding the cover on. It looks more like there is a hole cut out in the cover and this thing is placed inside it but still visible.

So your guess sounds a lot more likely than what the salesman told me.

THANK YOU!!!!!

ok after looking online....it's the auto dimming feature on the mirror. If it senses to much light/glare, it will dim a little. This way if someone has their high beams on, it won't blind you.
