Glad to hear you did ok on the cost and also that it achieved something. Don't need to hurry with the pics and measurements, I'll have to find the xj shaft I have for comparison and I'm not sure where it is, but I know I have one.

been away from the forum for awhile, busy as hell with work, and any spare time has been spent working on my GC, i have replaced all my tie rod ends, ball joints, had an alignment, and still have some death wobble... now it looks like i need to replace my power steering box. but before i do, i have one thing to try... it was suggested to me that i loosen the nut on top of my psb and tighten the bolt about 1/4 turn and see if it stiffens things up. at this point, i don't think i have anything to lose by trying... has anyone ever done this with any degree of success?

i'm seriously about to light this friggin thing on fire if i don't get a break from repairs sometime soon

well, looks like i have saved some serious money (for the short term, anyways, lol) i did some checking and a new power steering box runs between $550 & $600, while a reman'd unit can be had for about $225.

after soaking the nut & bolt with WD40 and letting it sit for about an hour, i was finally able to loosen off the lock nut. I tightened the bolt up about 1/8 of a turn, tightened up the lock nut and took it for a spin. it definitely felt better, but still had some slop to it. so i tightened it up another "heavy"1/16 of a turn, tightened the locker up again and headed out on the highway where my wobbles were most pronounced. SUCCESS!! not only did it handle the bumpy highway great, but the steering felt like it was brand new.

if anyone is finding their WJ is steering a little sloppy, you might find this helpful. all in all, it was a very simple procedure, took about 15 minutes of actual work and only required a 3/16 inch allen key & a 5/8 inch wrench. it may not be a long term solution, but may buy some time to source a proper replacement.

one word of caution, do not tighten the bolt up too much or your steering may get too tight and not want to "zero-out" on its own. a little bit goes a long way in this case.

I just did this to my WJ... it was all over the place before, really liking it now... might snug it up just a little bit more...
