Question Clunk ????

this is over a few days progress.......

2000 GC ltd
4.7L

369 000 kilometers ='s 229 286 miles on her

hey all, like to know if this mystery CLUNK has come to anyone else.
while driving around the city and speeds under 50 miles per hour all is fine. When on the highway driving around 70 miles per hour I get a clunk, can't really pin point where it is but seems like the rear end somewhere. it clunks then goes away then clunks again until I let off the gas. Seems to do it when under load. On the gas or if cruise control is ON and going up a incline.
Gives the whole Jeep a good shake.

tires all balanced
no noise anywhere when city driving just after that 70 miles per hour mark.

anyone have this before or opinions?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

today
doing:
rear upper control arm & ball joint
both rear control arms
sway bar links
rear coils spring isolators

can't figure out which one it is so change them all dammit!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ok well............ changed all that ( not coils spring isolators not needed ) rides smoother over bumps and stuff.
noise still there while on hwy and also when driving in the city when I come to a stop the clunk is there too. sound like something sliding back into place. anywhere else I should look? mounts for transmission? transfer case ? I'm lost here now!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

doing some diggin on the net. some say the rear diff pinion & ring gear spacing the lash might be too much ??

thoughts ?

Did you check the drivetrain joints? You'll need to get the wheels off the ground to allow you to move things around. The front driveshaft joint at the transfer-case end might be worn and wobbling around a bit, don't forget the check the joints inside the front knuckles.

I'm starting to get real confused now with the transmission mount.

all documents say I should have one style as per my engine & 4WD and year of vehicle.

this is what I have ( I also don't see any marks showing that it is moving around )

which says my GC should be a 2001 - 2004 and my GC is a 2000. unless Chrysler built it really late in the year and used 2001 parts ???

Nice pictures, the mount looks ok to me. did you check the motor mounts, the left one would be more suspect then the right,

I'm swapping this tranny mount on Monday. no I did not look at motor mounts. I will check them next. I can tho feel that "clunk" right in my butt in the seat when I stop and when on the hwy.

here's an idea that's completely out of the box. Did you check that your spare tyre is not loose, if you can move it it's not tight enough.

tranny mount ( rear engine mount ) is good not needed to be changed.
knock @ hwy speed we have now narrowed it down to the chain in the transfer case (247). very loose and sloppy and wanting to jump teeth on the drive sprocket , also gonna change the viscous coupler too.
FAAAAK!!!
